We suggest using two-factor authentication, which you can set up using your Microsoft or Google account credentials.
Two-factor authentication means using a second form of identity verification when you’re logging in to your account, in addition to your password. You won’t be able to access your account without your password AND the second verification method. This makes it harder for someone to access your account if your password is compromised, as they need more than just your password to log in.
Two-factor authentication is considered one of the ‘essential eight’— eight steps to cyber-security maturity recommended by the Australian Cyber Security Centre.
Even if you’re not familiar with the term two-factor authentication (which is a type of multifactor authentication), you’ve probably used it before. Sites like mygov require you to use two-factor authentication to ensure your personal data is protected.
Commonly used secondary authentication methods include entering a code that is sent to your mobile number or email address, or to an authentication app on your phone or device.
Once you have set up two-factor authentication, to log in to your account you’ll enter your username and password as usual. You’ll then get prompted to enter the verification code you’ll receive through the method that you’ve chosen.
It’s best to have two-factor authentication set up for any accounts that store confidential or personal data. Two-factor authentication gives you a higher level of protection from cyber-attacks, which are becoming increasingly common. As a lawyer, you’re dealing with a significant amount of confidential information, so it’s important to have strong data protection in place.
Having two-factor authentication may be a requirement under your professional indemnity insurance, so ensure you’ve read your policy disclosure statement if you choose not to use it.
Because mattero uses Google and Microsoft credentials to enable two-factor authentication, you don’t need to remember one more password—simply log in with your Microsoft or Google account details.
